Wendy and Lucy – a shaggy dog story
Mar 18th, 2009 by Nick

I am not sure if I would recommend Wendy and Lucy as a must see film. However if you want to see something a bit different from usual trash give it a go. Story concerns what some people might see as a lost soul (Michelle Williams) not really sure what she is doing or why but she wants to travel to Alaska in a dodgy car with her dog Lucy.

Strangely enough it does make you think about life and things. The dog, Lucy, is a key element so if you like animals there is something for you.

Van Dyck – a class act
Mar 18th, 2009 by Nick

If you like traditional painting you will love Van Dyck at Tate Britain. There are some glorious paintings of 17th century ladies and grandees. He could make the most mudane person look a million dollars. Its not surprising he was always very busy.

Keep an eye out for the very fancy shoes with amazingly fluffy bows, for men and women.

Its worth reading the Guardian’s review or have a look at Wikipedia.

Picasso – were my eyes deceiving me!
Mar 7th, 2009 by Nick

Go and see Picasso at the National Gallery if don’t mind your eyes and perception being damaged. This show probably not as big as the similar one in Paris which I thought also showed some of the Old Masters that Picasso measured himself against.

If you think you know Picasso you probably don’t until you go to the National Gallery. You might not like everything but will still find something worth seeing. The disjointed red Musketeer with his proud air but odd appearance is a good example. If you get a chance go to the Picasso Museum in Paris.

Eliades Ochoa – Buena Vista at the Barbican
Mar 2nd, 2009 by Nick

What an amazing evening of pulsating Cuban music from Eliades Ochoa at the Barbican. The staid Barbican was transformed into a storm of tropical music with an audience of swaying bodies. It was a true priviledge to be there to hear this veteran of the Buena Vista Social Club.

As well as his own unique guitar style and singing he was complemented by a band of stunning quality who kept up a dynamic beat the whole evening. Listing to the album of Buena Vista takes on whole new meaning when you have heard the songs played live and been part of his grande familia!
