Garden and Cosmos: The Royal Paintings of Jodhpur
Sep 18th, 2009 by Nick

If you have any interest in India at all get over to the British Museum to see Gardens and Cosmos before it finishes on 11 October. The exhibition concerns the royal court of 17/18 century Jodphur (India) and the rulers, their courts, loves and religious beliefs.

I thought the reviews were exaggerating but these are truly exceptionally charming paintings with astonishing colouring particularly the pink hues. The level of detail is also remarkable and the animals, especially the elephants, are amusing.

The depictions of the cosmos as sheets of pure gold colour are an unusual theological concept.

One word – wow.

Fish Tank – is Barking really that rank?
Sep 18th, 2009 by Nick

Fish Tank by Andrea Arnold is not for the easily shocked but is certainly worth seeing. Katie Jarvis puts in an excellent performance as the aggressive, screwed up Mia living on a dodgy council estate in Barking. While Michael Fassbender is equally good, handsome and charming as the questionable lover of Mia’s mum.

However two problem with the film are that it is too long by 20-30 minutes which causes a longeur in the second half; the ending is also a cop out after the stunning first hour but if you are sick of Kiera Knightly et. al. go see.

John Gay – The Betjeman of English photography?
Sep 13th, 2009 by Nick

If you like photos of a disappearing England get over to the Guildhall Art Gallery where there is a superb exhibition of John Gay’s photos with more available on the English Heritage site.

Gay said that photography depended on finding hidden details, unusual perspectives and the use of shadows. These principles are seen in his photos of English railway stations; country life; new buildings: he also specialised in animals.

He worked with Betjeman on a book of railways; and was a driving force behind the renovation of Highgate cemetery.  Also worth seeing are the cardboard silhouettes made as a child.

Londoners through a lens – get over to the Getty Gallery
Sep 3rd, 2009 by Nick

Well done to Time Out and Getty for this engrossing exhibition of photos of Londoners stretching back decades. There is a great variety of images of famous/imfamous and known/unknown people; landmarks old and new – a really fabulous collection for anyone interested in London or history.

There is something for everyone and it was busy. Pictures range from the suffragetes to film stars, builders in mid-air and traders on the old Covent Garden. It really is London as you have never seen it before. Striking image the baby in metal cage hanging out of a window.

Only on until 12 September.
